Peter Vitousek (1990) found that Myrica faya, an alien nitrogen-fixing plant introduced into Hawaii in the late 1800s, added large amounts of nitrogen to recent volcanic sites where nitrogen-fixing plants had not occurred before. Such fundamental changes in biogeochemical flux and cycling are important ecosystem-level effects of alien species invasions.
